At 2PM on Wednesday, the 28th there will be a dress up display in the MacInnes Pavilion at the showground that will be open to the public. The public will be invited, and the Royal Fling Doctors Service will be the beneficiaries of an entrance donation from the public.
In the morning there will be a display at Dundullimal House a national trust preserved property and a further opportunity to show of period costume as well as your cars on the front lawn at the homestead. This will include morning tea for the participants. A popular accessory sold by Keith at Henry’s is the Aluminium Z head which many Model T enthusiasts in Australia can provide testimonials as to its performance.

An extract from one such testimonial as published by Chris on his website Model T Central (https://www.modeltcentral.com/accessories_zhead.html).-

The Model T "Z" Head
The reproduction Z head, would have to be one of the most popular performance improving accessories used on the Model T Ford. The compression ratio in a Model T was originally set low (4.5:1) due to the low octane fuel available in its day. The Z head raises the original compression ratio to 6:1 and by today's standards is still very conservative.

                                                                                                                     The Z Head Combustion Chamber
Picture
The Standard Model T Ford Engine Head
It's trough-style combustion chamber swirls the fuel-air mixture, this helps to assure a more complete combustion of the mixture and therefore increased performance.
Compare this chamber shape to that of the original design. You can see how the Z head, compared to the standard Model T Ford engine head has a deeper chamber and areas that because they are not smooth, help create a swirl pattern as the air/fuel mix is drawn in past the contours. These appear a little like "pinches" in the surface just below the spark plug hole to the left and right in the Z head image.
The Z head does not provide the T with "neck snapping" performance, but rather a more responsive throttle and constant "lugging power". So why would I bother?  Well, it's when you come to the hills and head winds that the Z head comes into its own. The new head transforms the car in hilly country. Where a standard T drags itself up a hill, or worst, has to be dropped to low gear and effectively walking pace, the Z head car just keeps powering on.
In my opinion it would have to be one of the best value bolt-on performance enhancing accessories around for the T. It also has the added bonus of being made from heat treated aluminium and is therefore a lot lighter than the original and also has greater water jackets and therefore better cooling than the standard head.  The beauty of the Z head is that it looks almost stock, with only the "Z" cast at the water outlet neck the giveaway. With a coat of engine enamel, no-one would ever know!  Best of all, it's available brand new!

We received the following email from a Motel which is 4 blocks from the Showground
Louise Triplett
Hi Martin

Thanks for all the info, we have extra parking spaces but not exactly for 2 each. Probable close to 10 extra car spots, with our 15-room motel. But trailers would need to be left at the showground.
Please share with your members and call if I can help in any way at all.

SHANNONS RESTORATION STORY
This newsletter features Barry Sells Restoration Project. See Attached

                                                                         NEWSLETTER NO 4
ENTRIES
Entries now stand at 55 plus 9 expressions of interest, thanks to those that have entered.
PLANNING
We have had a team of 8 with 5 model Ts, survey the proposed runs to check the preliminary run sheets and likely transit times. We included a TT truck and a conservatively driven 1914 Tourer.
The daily runs are to the 4 point of the compass from Dubbo and the scenery is distinctively different and picturesque on each day. Most runs have little traffic or domestic structures once you leave Dubbo and thus progress is little impeded. There are many places of interest that will form the morning tea and lunch stops.
Because of the location of these stops the daily runs will be around 180 to 190 Kms total round trips so make sure your T is running efficiently and that you carry spare petrol.
ACCOMMODATION
We carried out a few checks on accommodation for the period of the Rally September 25th to October 1st, 2022 and found some motels and caravan parks are taking bookings, some at prices yet to be determined for the time of the rally.
As soon as we advised that the Rally was the first week of the school holidays, they said there would be no discounts for bulk bookings or early bird bookings during school holidays.
Dubbo like many country and costal NSW towns is experiencing a local travel boom spurred by the unavailability of overseas and interstate holidays and cruise holidays and this has turned accommodation providers bullish on their future bookings some are suggesting that we should encourage intending rally participants to book now.
Editor’s note - the future path of the Covid Pandemic will determine whether such pressure on future bookings is justified but Sue and I are currently deciding on our rally accommodation bookings (just to make sure we have a choice)
The following accommodation providers advised via the Information Centre that they have limited trailer parking
  • The Palms Motel (02 6881 8155): 4 trailer parking spots
  • Quest Dubbo (02 5809 8600): 3 car + trailer parking spots
  • Atlas Motel (02 6882 7244): 10 spots
On the property parking for trailers at many of the motels is non-existent, and even limited parking spots for a second car. Most properties have adjacent on street parking for a second cars.
Trailer Parking will be available at the showground in an area hired by the rally organisers this has an occasional roving security visit and the council advises that by the time of the rally that a boom gate will be fitted to the showground main gate. Strongly suggest you provide tow ball locks or wheel locks for added security if you intend to use this parking arrangement.
The Dubbo Visitor guide accommodation list is available on the link below from page 45 https://issuu.com/dubbocouncil/docs/visitor_guide_2019_interactive/60
SHANNON’S RESTORATION STORY PRIZE
We have received an entry in the Shannon’s Restoration stories from Tony Howard.
Tony’s story and pictures make a great read. We are aware there are other projects underway and we encourage you to provide a story and some picture that will encourage others restores and give you a chance at the Shannon’s Prize.
Your entry in the Shannon’s prize does not have to be a ground up complete rebuild but the re-roading of a T that has been put away in a shed for many years and the story of getting the car going and registered would qualify. Getting Model Ts to the Rally that we have not seen for many years is also of great interest.
SPONSORS
We have now a number of Sponsors that are adding to our available funds to help with entrant benefits and we will add their business details as an attached page of sponsors.
These Sponsors offer services that will assist you getting your cars ready for the upcoming rally so please support their business.
We are offering these sponsors an opportunity to provide a storey on their businesses and the first is Keith Wilson
Keith Wilson Wooden Spoke Wheels Allora

A builder by trade, Keith developed a fascination with wooden-spoked wheels early in his life.  Dudley Duffield of Nambour Queensland was a well-known wheel maker and made Keith a set of wheels for his 1929 Whippet.  When Keith asked Dudley to teach him how to make wooden spoke wheels, Dudley’s response was” I taught myself, so you can teach yourself”

Keith took up the challenge and started making wooden spoked wheels over 30 years ago.  Initially he built spoked wheels for metal felloe wheels then developed his expertise to include wooden felloe wheels.

The product range has expanded to wooden spoked wheels for wooden and metal felloes, wooden steering wheels, and steam-bent hood bows.  Most wheels are built using American Ash for felloes and Spotted gum for spokes.  Hickory felloes and spokes are available at an additional cost.

Wooden felloes are steam bent and then dried for 3 months to minimise shrinkage in the wheel.  Once the wheel is assembled the centre hub is faced in a lathe to ensure the wheels run true.  The dry climate at Allora is ideal for wooden wheel making.

Pictured below are some samples of wheels built by Keith.

OAKLAND WHEELS                                                                           VETRAN RENAULT WHEELS WITH BULB ON SPOKE

                                                               NEWSLETTER NO 3
ENTRIES
Well the end of the time on June the 30th to confirm your entry to the 20T2 rally at the early bird pricing for Dubbo has certainly caused a spike in entries – we now have 52 confirmed entries and 9 expressions of interest.
52 entries cover 114 drivers and passengers. There are 26 entrants from NSW, 10 from QLD, 6 from Vic, 5 from SA and 2 from ACT.
For all of those who have entered thank you for your support.
PLANNING
We have had a small team of our senior members who have spent time in Dubbo surveying the routes from the showground at peak hour in the morning to make sure our runs will have a trouble start to each day.
We are planning to run conservatively driven model Ts over our preferred 4 or 5 daily runs at the end of September early October. The entourage will be about 5 cars and we will be checking the driving time in each segment to ensure the distances will suit most entrants and not be too extreme for those entrants that enjoy pottering along as well as the commercial vehicles.
VOLUNTEERS
We have received a very generous offer from the OUTBACK MODEL T CLUB to join us in providing a number of marshals for morning tea and lunches. We are exploring with the Outback Model T Club how this can be best integrated into our organisational planning of the rally.

SHANNON’S RESTORATION STORY PRIZE
We have received the first entry in the Shannon’s Restoration stories from Robert Fordham.
Robert’s storey and pictures make a great read. We are aware there are other projects underway and we encourage you to provide a storey and some picture that will encourage others restores and give you a chance at the Shannon’s Prize – so pen to paper please.
Regards Martin Whitehouse.

MODEL T FORD NATIONAL RALLY 20T2 DUBBO – NEWSLETTER No 2

MODEL T ROUND UP 20T2
To make sure the Model T Round Up 2022 is a success we need each of you to identify a car club or an individual who may have some association with a model T and are not currently on our circulation list and get their permission and email address so we can send them information on the rally in an attempt to enthuse them to get their Model T to Dubbo in 2022. There are many car clubs that loosely use the term vintage without being tied to a brand that may have members with a Model T and if not currently registered will not need too much of encouragement to get their Model T on the road.
Finding and enthusing these owners will also provide potential new members for our main state Model T clubs, so please make the effort, and find a new Model T lead. The future of the Model T clubs may rest in your hands. Remember there are enough restored Model Ts and cars under restoration it is people enthused into campaigning these cars that will provide the future of the Model T Ford clubs in Australia.

VOLUNTEER TO ASSIST WITH THE 20T2 RALLY IN DUBBO
We have received a number of offers to assist with the running of the 20T2 Dubbo Rally, but we did not have a mechanism in place to collect these generous offers so if you can formalise your offer on the attached Volunteer Offer Sheet it will be greatly appreciated. The provision of the volunteers to make the rally operate is the prerogative of the host club but we appeared to have offers from people where the NSW club was not their primary club, so all volunteers are welcome.
Observing the army of willing workers that made the Maryborough rally such a success and to encourage those who are not planning bringing a Model T to Dubbo but would like to come and be official involved and we receive sufficient responses the committee will create a Volunteer Entrant with a fee (similar to the passenger fee) that just covers the direct costs such as the supplied meals.
You will notice all these tasks listed take place at the time of the rally in September 2022 and we will continue to circulate the Volunteer Offer sheet until we have a sufficiency of volunteers.
As the rally approaches we will confirm the tasks you will be rostered on for and we will have a meeting in the afternoon on the Saturday of the rally the 24th of September 2022 to review task details and hand out materials and publications involved.

RALLY PLANING PROGRESS
From our preliminary survey runs we have produced detailed maps of many of the potential runs around Dubbo and plan to test these in the end of September 2020 (Covid 19 willing) and we are still seeking a couple more testers with standard model Ts that are driven conservatively.
There are more potential runs than we have days for so post testing we will refine the list to the most appealing and drive worthy runs. We will then produce preliminary run sheets and plan to test these in September 2021.

RALLY ENTRY NUMBER AUCTION
For those that have already paid the rally entry fee might have noticed that Rally Entry Numbers 008 to 027 and 001 have been omitted these are being reserved for an online email auction close to the 20T2 Rally as a fund raiser so if you want to match your rally entry to your cars year of manufacture, and help the rally’s finances, put some pennies aside for the auction. (pennies are no longer legal tender so the auction will be held in dollars)

DUBBO ACCOMMODATION
Dubbo is blessed with a large number of accommodations types with at least 71 Hotels, Motel, and Caravan Parks.
A quick search in Google under “Dubbo Accommodation” will find this listing under “Accommodation Dubbo”
Alternatively put “Dubbo Visitors Guide” in Google and select “Visitors Information Centres. Dubbo Region” select “Visit” and scroll down to the “Visitor Guide Publication” and open it and from pages 44 to 56 there is a list of accommodation types or you can request a hard copy of this publication to be sent to you.

RALLY COMMITTEE REORGANISATION
The NSW committee for Rally 20T2 Dubbo has undergone some changes in that the planning has been taken under the wing of the club management committee and David Walker is both club treasurer and rally treasurer and Martin Whitehouse continues as acting rally secretary.

RALLY ENTRY FEE INCREASE
The stepped increase in the rally entry fee from $150 to $165 for an entrant and passengers from $80 to $90 occurs on the 30th of June 2020. The entry fees must be in the rally account by the 30th of June to qualify for the existing early bird offer. This is a better deal than leaving your money in the banks at the present interest rates.

National Rally 2022 Newsletter No 1

Well the dust has settled from the national rally in Maryborough along with the smoke from the East coast fires and the floods have receded. The Pop in to Maryborough Rally was such a great success the committee for the 2022 Dubbo Rally will not make an attempt “go one better” but concentrate on making Dubbo a different experience so it can be appreciated as an event as adding to the participants rallying experiences. Dubbo has been favoured by having had many road improvement programmes and its topography is best described as gentle rolling hills and plains and this will provide runs where reasonable average speeds can be obtained. The preliminary plans for the runs have identified that the most likely towns that will form morning tea stops and lunch stops which are not that far from Dubbo by the main roads but offer many alternate off highway routes for pleasant Model T driving experiences. We are planning to have 4 or 5 model Ts along with some modern cars and their crews make preliminary tests of the available runs in the week before the long weekend in October 2020 so a final selection can be made and detailing of the runs can commence. The response to the Rally 2022 Dubbo has been good, we have 10 potential entrants who have made an expression of interest payment and 16 entrants who have paid a full entry. Thank you to those entrants for their support. The next step in the rally price will be in June which is now just 4 months away so if you are going to take advantage of the early bird special get your entry in, as the payment must be in the rally Bank account before June the 30th to qualify. In newsletter 2 we will include a volunteer register and a form to indicate if you can assist with one or 2 of the many tasks that go into making a successful rally. We thank those that have already made offers of help and apologise that we not been organised enough to capture the many generous offers but if you can formalise your offers on receipt of the Newsletter 2, we would appreciate it. We have attached a copy the MODEL T FORD ROUND UP 2022 and ask you to be a participant in identifying the owner of a potential project or the re-roading of existing cars – we need your help. I have attached a tinkering tip which would qualify for the Shannon’s best restoration story (except I am on the committee) so if you come across a repair process on a car you are taking to Dubbo that needs broadcasting then enter it into the Shannon’s prize. Look forward to joining you on the road in Dubbo in 2022 Martin Whitehouse. Model T Ford National Rally 2022 Dubbo Entry Forms can be downloaded from the club website.
